Cowboys, Goblins, and Princesses...OH MY!
I have always had an utter fondness for Halloween. Perhaps this fondness derives from my love of theatre and playing dress up (or perhaps the fondness derives from my love of chocolate.) Either way, Halloween is this Thursday and I am so looking forward to greeting trick-or-treaters at my doorstep with a handful of sweets.
My favorite pastime as a child, hands down, was playing dress up on a rainy afternoon. I could be anything I wanted to be; a fashion model, a ballerina, a secretary or even a doctor. Inhibitions were flung to the wind and my imagination was free to roam as it pleased. Thankfully, my mother encouraged this kind of play.
Being the only girl in the family, my brothers often coerced me into watching countless cowboy movies and superhero TV shows. Occasionally, I would sneak away quietly and reinvent myself with a change of a costume.
Not only do I love partaking in dressing up on Halloween, but I also get a kick out of seeing what kinds of costumes the children are donning every year. Hint, homemade costumes get an extra piece of sugar :) Who will be ringing my doorbell this year? Cowboys, goblins, witches, President Obama, clowns, spiders, princesses, and pumpkins?
Seeing the neighborhood children trying to disguise themselves behind their masks while I am gleefully passing out treats is priceless. They mistakenly give away their identities as they run to hug me and say; “Thank you Miss Barbara.”
Happy Halloween everyone and be safe!
